What Is a Color Converter?

A Color Converter translates a color from one notation to another without changing how it looks on screen. Web designers meet three notations constantly: HEX codes such as #4f46e5, RGB values such as rgb(79, 70, 229) and HSL values such as hsl(243, 75%, 59%). They describe exactly the same color in different ways, and each one is handy in a different situation.

HEX is the compact standard that design tools and style guides pass around. RGB states how much red, green and blue light the screen mixes, each from 0 to 255. HSL describes hue (the position on the color wheel from 0 to 360 degrees), saturation (how vivid the color is) and lightness (how close it is to black or white). Because HSL matches how people naturally think about color, it is the easiest format to use when you need a lighter hover state or a darker border.

This Color Converter keeps every format in sync. Edit any field and the others follow at once. It also calculates the contrast ratio against white and black using the formula from the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG), so you can see at a glance whether text in that color will be readable.

How to Use the Color Converter

  1. Click the color swatch box to open the picker and choose a color, or type a HEX code such as #1e90ff or the short form #09f into the HEX field.
  2. If you already have RGB or HSL numbers, type them into those fields instead. The HEX field and the picker update automatically.
  3. Check the preview swatch to confirm the color looks the way you expect.
  4. Press Copy next to the HEX, RGB or HSL value to copy the CSS-ready string to your clipboard.
  5. Read the contrast section to see whether white or black text is easier to read on your color and whether it passes WCAG AA or AAA.
  6. Click any lighter or darker shade to make it your new working color, which is a quick way to build a matching palette.

Benefits of Using an Online Color Converter

Design handoffs rarely arrive in the format you need. A brand guide may list HEX codes while your animation code wants HSL, and a screenshot sampler may give RGB. Converting by hand is slow and error-prone, and a single wrong digit gives you a color that is subtly off. A reliable converter removes that guesswork.

The built-in contrast check helps you build accessible interfaces from the start. Low-contrast text is one of the most common accessibility failures on the web, and catching it while you choose a color is far cheaper than fixing it after launch.

Your privacy comes first. The Color Converter runs entirely in your web browser. Nothing you enter is sent to our servers, which keeps your data private and makes results appear instantly. See our Privacy Policy for details.

Common Use Cases for the Color Converter

  • Front-end developers turning a designer's HEX code into HSL for theme variables
  • Designers checking that a brand color meets accessibility contrast targets
  • Students learning how RGB and HSL color models work
  • Bloggers and store owners matching button colors to a logo
  • Game and app developers who need RGB values for code
  • Digital artists exploring lighter and darker variations of a base color
  • Email and newsletter designers who need exact hex values
  • Anyone matching paint, fabric or print colors to a screen color

Tips for Getting the Best Results

  • Use HSL when you want to create variations: keep the hue, then raise or lower lightness to build hover, active and disabled states.
  • Aim for a contrast ratio of at least 4.5 to 1 for normal body text and 3 to 1 for large headings to meet WCAG AA.
  • Do not rely on color alone to convey meaning. Pair color with text, icons or patterns for people with color vision differences.
  • Screens vary, so check important colors on more than one device before you finalize a design.
  • Save the CSS strings you copy into custom properties, for example --brand: hsl(243, 75%, 59%), so one change updates the whole site.
  • Short HEX codes such as #fff are fine for quick work, but use full six-digit values in style guides to avoid confusion.

Color Converter FAQ

What is the difference between HEX, RGB and HSL?

They are three ways to write the same color. HEX is a six-digit hexadecimal code, RGB gives red, green and blue amounts from 0 to 255, and HSL gives hue, saturation and lightness. Browsers treat all three identically in CSS.

Why does my HSL value change by a point when I convert back and forth?

RGB values are whole numbers, so converting to HSL and rounding can shift a value by a unit. The color you see is effectively the same, and the RGB and HEX values stay exact.

What does the contrast ratio mean?

It compares the brightness of two colors on a scale from 1 to 1 (identical) up to 21 to 1 (black on white). WCAG asks for at least 4.5 to 1 for normal text at level AA and 7 to 1 at level AAA.

Can I enter a three-digit HEX code?

Yes. A short code such as #0af is expanded to #00aaff automatically. Each digit is simply doubled.

Does this Color Converter support transparency?

This version converts opaque colors. For transparency you can add an alpha value yourself by changing rgb() to rgba() or hsl() to hsla() in the copied code.

Is my data stored anywhere?

No. Every calculation happens in your browser, and nothing you enter is uploaded or saved.
